What is a domain name?

When this domain name, and any domain name, is first registered with a domain registrar, you are asked for not only contact information for the ‘Owner’ or ‘Registrant’, but also for an ‘Administrative’ contact, a ‘Billing’ contact, and a ‘Technical’ contact.

You are also asked for the ‘DNS’ setting of the website … this is a name or DNS code for where the website will ‘exist’ on the Internet. The DNS setting is the piece of the Internet puzzle that allows the viewer to type in a domain name address … http://www.mexican-gold.com … in his browser address window, and then the website magically appears. Get this part wrong, and your website will never be seen by anyone.

When it comes time to renew your domain registration, you are sent a renewal notice from the ‘registrar’. You pay your renewal fee, and your website is ‘active’ for another year. Relatively easy to do, but when you only do this once a year, it can be confusing. And we have found that registrars are continuously ‘updating’ their own website and changing the ‘rules’ on how you must renew … more problems you need to contend with.

Other problems appear when the email for the Registrant or Billing contact that is on the registration is no longer an email address that you commonly use or monitor. That all important billing notice can go ‘nowhere’ or be not noticed until after the due date … and then the domain name registration is canceled by the registrar for non-payment … and you have lost your domain name registration … and your website address! Not good at all!
